Well done everyone. We made it happen! For an entire day,we turned a poorly used space at the junction of Boston Avenue and Queensway into a Pocket Place for People- a place where people enjoyed spending time with others from the neigbourhood and also walking and cycling past.
It was a cold and wet day but it didn’t dampen our spirits, did it? In fact, the Pocket Place-making event added some colour and fun to the gloomy day . It made a lovely spot for pedestrian/cyclists to break their journey and relax for a bit.
The purpose of the Pocket Place-making event was to spend the day with everyone who uses or wishes to use this space at the junction of Boston Avenue and Queensway to generate and trial ideas to transform the space. We used straw bales, colourful tapes, chalk, old tyres and anything we could find on site to represent everyone’s ideas. What we had at the end of the day was impressive. We had created a pocket place with seats, art work, pathways, planters etc. These temporary additions to the space highlighted the potential of the place to be a enjoyable community space.
We also had lovely feedback from pedestrians and cyclists who said such a pocket place along the street makes their other monotonous journeys more interesting. Below are a few pictures from the day. If you have any ideas to add or want to give us any feedback please feel free.
Vehicular exit from Boston Avenue to Queensway closed for the day- giving a safe large space for children to run around freely and more space for people to relax.
Getting busy choosing things to represent ideas- straw bales, paints, paper, chalk, tyres etc
Desired pathway marked with yellow tape and chalk!
Tree hangings made of bike tyres!
Some very creative drawings of ideas for the space from the young and ambitious!
Sharing is fun and every voice equally important!
We are all creative. We just express through different mediums. Everyone expressing their ideas in the way they felt most comfortable- verbally, using sketches, in written words, craft or representing it using props.
Many ideas about making the space more colourful with planters and art work!
Very valid questions raised about street clutter! It’s not always about adding more things to a space, sometimes it is important to re-evaluate what is there to see if it useful or only an obstruction!
Accessibility for one and all is key!
Planters and lights that kept the place lively through to the night. Definitely made pedestrians and cyclists feel safer and welcomed!
Art work created using old car typres. Can you believe this was waste generated by 2 cars alone after one servicing session? We put them to some good use. Reuse and recycling is fun. Lets stay creative!
In comparison, the tyres in this picture where given for recycling after several servicing sessions of 10 bikes.
Lovely benches for people to sit on made from straw bales.
Face painting! After all, its people that add life to a space. Colourful and lively Pocket Place!
Halloween surprise for all the little trick or treaters!
Feedback from pedestrians and cyclists adding more colour to the tree hangings!
